Jim recently retired as Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer for Patriot Rail Company, a rail holding company based in Jacksonville Florida.
A highly experienced senior transportation executive, Jim’s passion for excellence was formed early during his days as a USAF F4 Phantom II jet fighter pilot where he acquired his ‘don’t forget who packs your parachute’ approach to leadership.
Widely acknowledged as a motivational and inspirational change agent, Jim and his programs have been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Traffic World, The Journal of Commerce, and other publications. He is highlighted in the leadership book “Red Zone Management" (2001-Holland). He served as a rail safety expert for TV news and news magazine broadcasts, and he is the author of technical papers on safety, culture, and compliance, including Reports to Congress on transportation safety.
Jim’s earlier notable leadership roles include: Senior Vice President at trucking giant Waste Management, Inc.; Vice President & Chief Safety Officer at Class 1 CSX Railroad where Progressive Railroading Magazine dubbed him “culture change guru;” Senior Partner at Brimstone Consulting Group; and, productivity manager at Procter and Gamble.
During his tenure at WM, Jim’s “Mission to Zero” (“M2Z”) and “Life Changer” programs produced a marked improvement in safety culture in this international 50,000 employee company resulting in a dramatic 75% improvement in casualty experience, and 50% reduction in the corporation's $100M+ workers compensation costs in five years.
Jim also offers a decidedly unique leadership perspective having served as the former top career safety official for the US Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) after progressing through FRA field and headquarters ranks. He began his transportation career in field operations at the former Chicago & North Western Railway (now part of Union Pacific).
Jim holds an FAA commercial pilot certification with multi-engine jet, and instrument ratings. He earned a Master’s Degree from Webster University, a Bachelor’s Degree from Arizona State University, and completed post-graduate and executive leadership programs at the Harvard Business School, the University of Southern California, and Northwestern University.
Jim was a lecturer in the European Divisions of the University of Maryland, and Central Texas College, while stationed overseas in USAF. He received the civilian “Silver Star for Bravery” from the American Federation of Police for action while in the USAF.
Active in the community, Jim was formerly a member of the Executive Committee, past-Chairman of the Personnel Committee, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Jacksonville Urban League.
