Marie joins SG Collaborative Solutions™ as a career Collaborator with over twenty years of experience working in the engineering and health care sciences, including hospitals and health plans, as well as academic and government institutions. She is widely respected for her ability to unite diverse stakeholders under a common purpose, and has been highly effective in promoting public health policies and improving regulatory oversight within the healthcare industry. Combined with an engineer’s intuitive understanding of socio-technical design, she brings a true Collaborator’s passion for enhanced governmental effectiveness at all levels of society.
Her most recent example of collaborative leadership has been at the Minnesota Alliance for Patient Safety (MAPS), Minnesota’s public/private patient safety coalition, where she has served as Executive Director since July of 2012. Prior to accepting this position, Marie was instrumental in helping organize MAPS in 2000 while working for the Minnesota Commissioner of Health at the state health department and remained active in various MAPS committees and work groups throughout its history.
Marie was the Senior Advisor for Patient Safety at the Minnesota Department of Health and was responsible for implementing the first-of-its-kind state adverse events reporting law and producing Minnesota’s first public adverse events report. Marie also served as Senior Policy Advisor to the Commissioner of Health at the state health department. She has worked as the Director of Patient Safety Policy at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota and as Director of Public Policy at Allina Health System in Minneapolis. She has been a member of several National Quality Forum advisory panels on patient safety and served as a liaison member of the Institute of Medicine Patient Safety Data Standards Committee. Marie has also taught graduate Health Policy at the University of Minnesota and is a regular guest lecturer for health policy and public health courses. She is the past-president of the Minnesota Public Health Association.
Prior to MAPS Marie was an independent consultant specializing in health organization quality improvement, patient safety, organizational culture change and public policy. Major clients included: Outcome Engineering, a Dallas-based risk management firm; Courage Center; Stratis Health, Medtronic and the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement.
Marie has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering and a Master of Science degree in Health Administration.
